The Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is a unique inter-institutional program between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University. The Joint Department is globally ranked 15th in biomedical engineering (Shanghai Ranking 2022) with research space exceeding 65,000 square feet, research expenditures totaling over $26 million, and more than 50 primary teaching and research faculty members across both our campuses.
Our graduate program is a part of the School of Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill and the College of Engineering at NC State. Our unique partnership provides our students full standing across each university system, promoting access to a top-ranked public medical school in primary care and research, while also providing institutional support for translating academic research to the marketplace. Our Ph.D. students focus on five major research areas of growth and development: biomedical imaging, biomedical microdevices, pharmacoengineering, regenerative medicine, and rehabilitation engineering.
