Poster L3 - Effect of EDOT-Py Nanoparticles in the Viability of Brain Tissue Scaffolds

Introduction:  Organic bioelectric devices like scaffolds have recently made many breakthroughs in tissue engineering but a critical issue in modern medicine, brain tissue regeneration, remains relatively untouched. Scaffolds function to generate a tissue with a particular form but are limited by being too rigid to support various cell types. Since tissue cells should ideally be in a scaffold similar to the environment the tissue experiences in vivo, most scaffolds are not conducive to mimicking a brain environment for brain tissue regeneration. The creation of a new scaffold device with similar properties to the brain would allow for more exploration of brain tissue regeneration treatments.

Materials and

Methods:  Biocompatible materials for brain tissue scaffolds would need to be soft and conductive. This may be achieved through using hydrogels functionalized with polymers with these properties. EDOT-Pyrrole nanoparticles (NPs) were selected due to their high sensitivity to bioelectrical signals while fibronectin was chosen for its pre-existing use in wound healing. A hydrogel with both materials could help encourage tissue regeneration. ND7/23 cells were cultured in the hydrogels then analyzed through fluorescent imaging.

Results, Conclusions, and Discussions: The implications of the results could allow functionalized hydrogels to be adapted into current bioelectric devices and create a new and safe method to regenerate brain tissue in patients that may need it. In doing so, this research works to further add to health literacy and understanding of neurological processes and provides a basis for future exploration of innovative medical treatments for tissue regeneration, be it in brain, skin, or heart tissue.
