Poster Z13 - Video-based Evaluation Systems for Tic Detection in Tourette Syndrome

Introduction: Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder marked by motor and vocal tics and varies significantly among afflicted individuals. Standard therapies for TS include dopamine blockers, botulinum injections, central adrenergic inhibitors, behavioral therapy. For patients who become refractory to conventional TS therapies, deep brain stimulation (DBS) has emerged as a potential treatment option. Currently, clinicians mostly rely on subjective clinical assessment scales, however, assessing treatment outcomes of patients with TS requires a more reliable and precise identification of tics.

Materials and

Methods: This study evaluated DBS therapy for three patients with TS using video recordings taken during monthly clinical visits following surgery. In each video recording, subjects were tasked to tic freely, rest and to voluntarily move their left and right arms alternately. Each subject’s video was evaluated using two labeling interfaces which were assessed for their accuracy and precision in detecting tics with respect to time-stamping tic occurrences. One labeling interface adopts video timeline segmentation methodology to detect tics – tic segmentation interface. The other interface uses object tracking to detect and track tics across video frames – tic tracking interface.

Results, Conclusions, and Discussions: The results from the video analyses show that even though the tic tracking interface had higher levels of accurately detecting tics, both labeling methods had negligible differences in cross-validation of accuracy and precision across subjects. Therefore, the implication is that these methods are interchangeable and equally advantageous for video-based tic coding.
