Poster Z3 - Chiral Ceria Nanoparticles as Potential Next-Generation Antibiotics

Introduction:  Nanoparticles (NPs) have been extensively studied for their antimicrobial properties, providing a promising avenue for the development of next-generation antibiotics. Although many studies attribute the antibacterial activity of NPs to the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and ion release, the actual mechanism is more complex. This complexity stems from NPs' biomimetic function, enabling them to interact with bacterial biomolecules.

Materials and

Methods:  It is well known that the material, shape, size, charge, and surface chemistry of nanoparticles are critical for their antibacterial activity. However, the chirality of nanoparticles has not been studied well. In our research, we focused on the role of chirality in ceria nanoparticles and their interaction with bacteria and phenol-soluble modulins (PSMs), the monomeric form of amyloid fibers in biofilms.

Results, Conclusions, and Discussions: PSMs significantly contribute to the formation and stability of biofilms. We discovered that the chirality of ceria nanoparticles significantly influences their interaction with bacteria and PSMs. Ceria nanoparticles with different handedness exhibited distinct interaction patterns with PSMs. These findings highlight the importance of nanoparticle chirality in their interaction with biomolecules, bacteria, and biofilms. Specifically, the chirality-dependent interaction of ceria activity. However, more comprehensive studies are required to fully understand the mechanisms of these interactions for potential clinical applications.
