The Pennsylvania State University, United States
My name is Mica Leah Pitcher, and I am currently a fifth-year graduate student pursuing a PhD in Chemistry at The Pennsylvania State University.
I am a researcher in the Bio-Soft Materials Laboratory at Penn State under Dr. Amir Sheikhi, where I dive deep into the fundamentals of cellulose chemistry and renewable materials engineering. My research is based on two prongs. First, a top-down approach comprising fundamental investigations of the fine nanostructure of cellulose, particularly the disordered regions, and a bottom-up approach to engineer cellulose for development of highly functional materials. My research comprises synergistic investigations on both the fundamentals and applications of disordered cellulose, and I am highly passionate and driven to solve environmental issues and contribute to more sustainable processes.
Once graduating in May of 2024, I will be looking forward to start my career in industry, particularly working towards sustainability and discovering solutions for important environmental problems.
Besides science and cellulose, I enjoy spending time with my three cats (most of all), drawing or painting or any form of making art, watching anime, and writing poetry.
