Jiawen Chen is currently a dedicated PhD candidate in Biomedical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology. Her research is dedicated to advancing the field of tissue engineering for the diagnosis and treatment of lung injuries and diseases. She has a profound commitment to investigating the airway epithelium, a critical protective barrier for lung tissues.
In her most recent research endeavor, Jiawen delved into the realm of airway epithelial injuries, exploring their impact on both cilia beating and tissue bioimpedance at the injury site. Her groundbreaking work has demonstrated that injuries to the airway epithelium can be accurately and noninvasively diagnosed through bioimpedance measurements. These promising findings have the potential to revolutionize the development of efficient and precise diagnostic tools for detecting airway tissue injuries at their earliest stages. Ultimately, this innovation could empower healthcare professionals to intervene with therapeutic measures more effectively.
Jiawen’s pioneering research on this topic has been recognized with the distinction of being published as a Featured Article in APL Bioengineering. She is poised to present her findings at the prestigious 2023 BMES Annual Meeting.
In addition to her remarkable contributions in the field of airway epithelium research, Jiawen concurrently engages in three other projects focused on advancing technologies for diagnosing and treating lung diseases, as well as pioneering developments in lung tissue engineering. These endeavors have already appeared or is forthcoming in leading journals within the biomedical engineering community.
For her tireless dedication and exceptional research outcomes, Jiawen has been honored with the prestigious Stevens Excellence Doctoral Fellowship for the academic year 2023-24.
